Schema Therapy

Schema therapy was first developed by Jeffrey E. Young, and was used as an intervention in personality disorders, including those in the chronic DSM axis I conditions. The therapy merges aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy, emotion-focused therapy, psychoanalysis, and attachment theory. In this regard, the schema therapy is perceived to be comprehensive and integrative approach that is intended to treat the personality conditions. The therapeutic interventions are also used to treat mental health problems. The procedure involves close working with a therapist in order to understand and uncover the diverse schemas, also known as unhelpful patterns, that people acquire when their emotional needs are never met while growing. The goal of using the schema therapy is to teach individuals that the experiences during past years must never cause distress in the individual.

The schemas usually develop when the child is young, and makes them resistant to change. When these schemas are neglected, there are higher chances that the actions and thoughts of the person will be influenced negatively. In this regard, there is a need to have a comprehensive approach to ensure that all emotional needs of the child are addressed during their early years. Schemas usually subconsciously affect one’s mental state, and lead to a series of harmful and unhealthy habits. Schema therapy aims to combine various therapeutic approaches to treat and manage any odd behaviors that may lead to personality disorders.
