Role of Father on Socio-cognitive Development of Children

Overview

This paper examines the significant role paternal involvement plays in children's socio-cognitive development, arguing that fathers contribute directly and substantially to language acquisition, emotional development, and overall childhood development. The essay emphasizes that while maternal roles have traditionally dominated developmental research, contemporary understanding must recognize fathers' distinct contributions through physical play, verbal stimulation, and parenting behaviors.

Role of Father on Socio-cognitive Development of Children

Children are affected by several factors in their environment as they grow up. These environmental factors contribute towards shaping the child’s morals, knowledge, and social relationships, physical and mental judgment. As a particular Swahili proverb implies, the upbringing of a child determines his character. Therefore, the home environment dramatically affects the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children. The role of parents in the development of children is, therefore, crucial. For decades, academic research and literature have put great emphasis on the mother's part, rather than the father, in the development of children. However, due to the dynamic change in modern society, fathers have gained more attention in the development of their children (Lamb et al. 2017).

Even though the role of fathers hasn't been the primary interest in childhood research, interestingly, both paternal involvement and socioeconomic factors should be considered to fully comprehend the paternal impacts on children's language and life skills development (Rolle et al. 2019). The father may be able to play different roles in the development of children. However, these roles may be limited by social and economic factors of the environment (Baker et al. 2018). The father's roles may vary from one society to another due to social factors. These roles may also be limited by economic factors such that the father may not be physically available to play his parts.
