Emerson: The father of American Literature
Emerson viewed as an essential person in American literature as he was one of the brains behind Transcendentalism in the American soil. Transcendentalism was connected to the Romantic Movement that advocated for coming up with artwork that was unique to the American culture. Emerson and other writers in the Romantic Movement believed America should have its literature that would resonate with Americans and not take European literature traditions. Moreover, Emerson believed that American literature should have its voice and concerns. Emerson was instrumental in coming up with transformational and generational conflict in his writings (Collins, 2018). Besides, Emerson wrote by the use of a commanding voice that would resonate with the American culture.
'Self-Reliance' one of the writings of Emerson emphasized the need of an individual developing their own culture and taking note of what one has as talents. In extension, Emerson believed in coming up with American literature that would not be associated with the models of Europe. In the mentioned writings, Emerson was of the idea that each person should have their thinking as they use their talents to better their lives. 'Nature' one of Emerson's other writings dealt with the wonders that are in the wild. In 'Nature,' Emerson wanted Americans to think of themselves as moral beings who should have a good standing in society (Emerson, 2017).
The new philosophy of Emerson was for an individual to know themselves and have morals in society.
