Property Rights

The importance of property rights cannot be denied because they are the basis for establishing healthy and successful businesses. An efficient and free-market heavily depends on property rights within the jurisdiction. The protection of property rights ensures that there is control over economic resources, and any emerging conflicts are resolved fairly and peacefully. Property rights are necessary because they are the cornerstone of stable economies. With these rights, businesses can own assets and other retail estates. Therefore, property rights provide legal ownership of certain things such as buildings and land. In this way, the business is protected from undertaking its goals and utilizing the assets to enhance its value and client base. The protection of property rights ensures that properties cannot be confiscated by the government unfairly. In this regard, property rights are necessary because they protect businesses from government over-reach (Godt, 2017).

While the ownership of properties is essential, the government has an ‘eminent domain’ to confiscate specific properties for public benefit. However, it is expected that there will be fair compensation for the owner following the regulations in the constitution. Moreover, the state, local, and federal laws limit how a business or owner can utilize a property (Johnson, 2015). When the owner uses his or her property to facilitate illegal activities, the government can limit those rights and ensure that they are charged based on the laws of the land.
