Early, in my freshman years, my two groupmates shunned me in a class project. It must have been my diminutive stature, quietness, and slowness in grasping concepts that made them judge me harshly. Their remark that “I was not smart enough” left me hurt and feeling that I could not fit in. With this, I hardly participated in the project leading to loss of important participation marks (15% of the total) and I barely hang on a B that year. That incident left me in a confusing state. On the one hand, I felt I was not good enough, and therefore, I could stick to video games which were more fun and where I could not be judged because I was good especially at FIFA. On the other hand, however, seeing my friends post their good grades on social media, get praise from teachers, and brag in front of other students made me feel jealous because some part of me held that I could do just as good as them.

Thinking about it, it is jealous part of me that must have won this mental battle. I stepped out to prove these classmates wrong. If I study hard, do my homework on time, and not wait till the last minute to read for tests, I told myself, I could improve on my grade and prove the classmates wrong.
