- How has media convergence impacted your media use?
Media convergence refers to the coming together of different media outlets under one digital platform. It brings together newspapers, radios, televisions, and film, among others, through internet technology. It, therefore, means that anyone can get the media they want in one place. The media blend brought by convergence has affected my media use in different ways.
I easily access any breaking news or any latest news comfortably on my laptop or smartphone. I do not need to wait to prime time to watch the news on television channels since I already read or watched the news items on the internet. For example, I follow the world’s statistics on the COVID-19 disease through news alerts that I have activated on my phone. The new media has rendered my television reserved for entertainment programs only. Media convergence has saved me money for buying daily newspapers since they are found on the internet for free or at a lesser amount than normal hard copies rates. The spending that I have to do is on the internet browsing charges only. Every medium, including television and radio, also keep updating newsworthy items supplementing what the newspapers did not cover.
Convergence has also taught me to be critical and to choose well the medium from which I consume information Quack media have taken advantage of convergence and now share unverified information.
