Dear Lynnette,
I am happy to obtain an opportunity to lead this vital initiative in resolving the diversity issue at Lakeland Medical Clinic. I am very keen on assembling and chairing an interdisciplinary committee of 4 to 6 individuals to put the problem in context or clarify the problem, which is primarily the absence of knowledge on Haitian culture, norms, and health practices among the staff, and suggest recommendations to establish trust with the majority population of Haitians, improve patient satisfaction, and improve the decreasing numbers. This project will connect with my interest in developing leadership within the organization and will help in providing equitable care.
Desirable Leadership Qualities
To be able to successfully implement such a project, the leader will need the following qualities that are relevant in the management of cultural mistrust, interprofessional and community collaboration, and the systemic change of the diverse healthcare setting. The major attributes are cultural humility (continuous self-reflection and willingness to learn about the views of others), excellent communication to overcome language and cultural barriers, empathy to know about the experiences of the community, long-term vision to achieve equity gains, and the capability to motivate the team towards inclusive objectives.
These qualities allow the leader to go through delicate issues such as historical stigma, policy obstacles, and employee prejudices and encourage trust and teamwork.
