Importance of the Lascaux Caves and the Paintings

Lascaux caves entails massive complex caves in the southwestern regions of France. The caves contain more than 600 paintings that are believed to be sacred and depict the history of ancient people. The paintings are representations of large animals, local fauna that correspond with the fossil records in Upper Paleolithic periods. Notably, the paintings resulted from artworks from different generations, with age of painting estimated to be 17, 000 years. The caves were discovered in 1940 by teenagers who saw the illustration of animals on the cave walls (Rick Steve’s Europe, 2010).

The caves and paintings are important because they illustrated the history, believes, and life of the people. The meaning of the paintings is more complex and are believed to preserve the history of the people. Notably, skilled artists were mandated to work in the sacred caves in order to keep myths and dreams for future generations. These paintings became the memory of the society. Therefore, the caves are important because they provide a portal for understanding the complex culture of the Magdalenian people (Rick Steve’s Europe, 2010).
