Reading Response-Materials and Manufacturing

Daniels Soyer's article is a short account of the growth and decline of the garment industry as contributed by immigrant settlement in New York City. Although the industry has increasingly been diminishing in the past two decades, the apparel business remains a considerable part of New York City's history (Donahoe et al., 2006). Besides the short anecdotes the authors narrate on the immigrant's role in the growth of the apparel industry, there seems to be no shadow thesis. For that reason, I was particularly interested in examining Daniel Soyer's" A court of Many Colors" on two major accounts: capitalism and arts.

First, the article discusses the mixed feelings expressed in the unionist campaigns and the capitalist interest of the sweatshop owner. Although the unions and consumers had increasingly expressed resentment campaigns against the exploration of workers, they could only achieve little success. It has been difficult for the unionist to find points of most significant leverage given the high cost of operation in the garment industry (Donahoe et al., 2006). While it seems unreasonable to push for fair compensation in a shaky industry, I think companies with no active union will overtime undermine their workers.

The garment industry was also known for its role in positioning arts. With increasing globalization, consumers in the united began outsourcing clothes from Japan and Hong Kong. The contemporary society is marred with increasingly unpredictable events.
