Gun Control
With the occurrence of mass shootings in the United States, gun control has a great potential of reducing crime. There are numerous studies confirming that firearm regulations are effective in crime reduction. Individual with a negative criminal history must be prohibited from carrying gun or firearms. The increasing gun crimes and mass killings are caused by uncontrolled gun in the hands of wrong people. With more guns circulating, there is potential for more crimes occurring. Therefore, with strict gun control policies, violent criminals will lack firearms (Colarossi & McLpine, 2019).
The gun control regulations include policies that outline specific requirements before an individual is allowed to own a weapon. There is evidence that laws that prohibit possession of arms by former criminals reduces cases of homicides. By undertaking background checks on people requiring gun licensing, cases of criminals and people with mental problems having weapons will reduce. Across the United States, states with policies that forbid selling of weapons to individuals with negative crime history have very low crime rates. Keeping guns way from people who are likely to be violent reduces crime rates (RAND Corporation, n.d.).
There are improvements in crime reduction after implementation of gun control laws. However, law enforcement agencies must seal all loopholes to prevent juveniles and convicted criminals from accessing weapons. There is a need to be strict in application of regulations within a community.
