Introduction

  1. Mental health illnesses increase the risk for chronic conditions as well as lead to intentional and unintentional injury (Pan American Health Organisation).
  2. Mental health refers to a state of mental wellbeing or the absence of any mental health disorder that would otherwise impede an individual's ability to cope with the stresses of life and achieve their potential (Pan American Health Organisation).
  3. There are five steps to improving one’s mental health.

Body

  1. Step 1: Socializing with other people improves one’s mental health (Troyer). People who engage in regular social interactions with friends and family are 2.4 times less likely to have mental health issues or other chronic conditions associated with stress as compared to people with no social contacts (Brody).
  2. Step 2: Exercising improves one’s mental health (Williams). Exercises has been shown to reduce the number of an individual’s poor mental health days by more than 40% (UCLA Health).
  3. Step 3: Engaging in meaningful activities improves one’s mental health (Emamzadeh). Individuals who engage in meaningful activities such as developing a new skill are less susceptible to poor mental health compared to those who do not engage in any form of meaningful activity (Mean 87.53 versus Mean 109.70) (Jamali et al.).
  4. Step 3: Cultivating generosity improves one’s mental health (Davis). 94% of people who engage in volunteering activities within the last year believe that it improved their mental health (Volunteering Victoria).
  5. Step 3: Practicing mindfulness improves one’s mental health (Davis). 85% of people who practice mindfulness experience markedly lower depressive and anxiety symptoms (Petri).
