Scene 1: International Airplane
Characters: Eli, a man in his 80s, is seated on a plane's seat reading a newspaper.
Esparanza, a middle-aged woman, arrives a few minutes later and begins to put her bags in the overhead bin. Eli slides down his eyeglasses and begins to watch Esparanza settle down.
Esparanza
Hey, I am Esparanza (She stretches her hand out)
Looking lost in thoughts, Eli offers his hand in return.
Eli
Eliezer
He slides back his glasses turns to the window pretending to look at something outside.
Esparanza
Going for business or Canberra is home?
Eli
I am on a business trip.
Esparanza
Okay!
She nods as she swallows several pills.
Eli
Are you okay?
Esparanza
Sure! Just that I haven’t been on a flight for a while.
Eli
Oh okay!
Are you on a business trip as well?
Esparanza
Not really, mine is a vacation with a few business errands.
I will be away for two weeks then…
(Final boarding announcement) The two of them remain silent for a few minutes as Eli looks outside the window. The plane takes off.
Eli
You were saying something
Esparanza looks over at Eli with a smile.
Esparanza
About my trip?
I meant I couldn't afford to be far away from home for too long.
When I was a young girl, I always wanted to get out of Mango or away from Chicago and never go back. That is different now because my community needs me, Mango Street will always be a part of me.
Eli looks at Esparanza with a puzzled look. Esparanza offers a big smile.
