Abstract
One of the growing forms of drug use disorder among young people is pill addiction. While drug addiction is often associated with illicit recreational drugs like heroin or cocaine, the number of young adults with a prescription drug disorder has grown markedly over the years. This essay will discuss the effects of pill addiction among young people. It will highlight the short-term health effects of prescription pill addiction. For instance, misusing stimulants results in side effects similar to cocaine: young people taking stimulants in large doses or in other ways besides swallowing pills display symptoms including paranoia, irregular heartbeat, and high body temperatures. However, the essay will focus on the broader social impacts of pill addiction, including its adverse effects on young people's mental health, academic achievement, peer and family relationships, and involvement with the criminal justice system. Besides the immediate health-related problems, young people abusing prescription drugs are likely to have academic difficulties, fewer social relationships, poorer mental health, and higher delinquency rates.
