African American History

According to Robert Harris, the author attempts to highlight the plight of Black Americans in the United States (US). Harris argues that Black Americans continue to face widespread discrimination as compared to other parts of the work where Blacks are, for example, in Europe and North America. Robert Harris's main point of focus is the dilemmas involved in teaching African American history. The paradox in Africa American history is Blacks being “apart from” and “a part of” the US at the same time. First, African Americans are discriminated against in American history with too much minority history. When too much focus is directed to minority history, other racial groups such as Black Americans are ignored. Secondly, roots of racial identity according to Harris contribute to the discrimination of African Americans in the US. Color, for instance, is used in distinguishing racial groups. Anything “white” is perceived as to be good, whereas anything “black’ is viewed as bad and inferior.

Based on the above arguments provided by Robert Harris, African Americans continue to be in a state of limbo as to whether they are part of the American society. I tend to agree with Harris's opinion since for a long time, the Black race in the US continue to agitate for better and equal living status as compared to the Whites. Cases of racial discrimination are also on the rise involving mainly African Americans and Whites.
