The Difference
Armchair anthropology would not be recognized as a passive pursuit in search of information while researching on communities. It had a a minimal reflection that looked at works done by other writers. Moreover, the kind of research done through Armchair anthropology was not detached from the informants and their activities that collected and did data recording while at their stations. On the other hand, Ethnography includes getting involved in the daily lives of a given community for a long time to collect different forms of data about such a community. In short, Ethnography is more detailed than Armchair anthropology.[1]
The anthropology of today has made it possible for the behaviors of other cultures to be discovered because of detailed research. Today’s anthropology has made it easy to get into places with different cultures, thereby learning the behaviors and the kind of life of such cultures that would not be known through Armchair anthropology. Through anthropology, certain people have been able to understand they possess ethnocentric ideas. Moreover, anthropology has made it easy for other populations to respect other cultures a there is no specific culture that is superior to the other. It is only that beliefs are different from one culture to the other.[2] Anthropology has also rivaled armchair anthropology as it has discovered there is diversity in cultures. No culture is static as it keeps changing with time as globalization continues ravaging the world.
