Cultural Destruction of California Native Populations Under the Spanish Mission System

Overview

This essay examines how Spanish Crown policies and Franciscan missionaries systematically destroyed California native populations' cultural traditions through the mission system. The paper argues that forced settlements, religious indoctrination, corporal punishment, and labor exploitation combined to devastate Native American ways of life along the Pacific Coast. It uses historical sources and the example of Father Duran to illustrate missionary complicity in cultural genocide.

The sources prove that the policies of the Spanish Crown and Franciscan officials contributed to the cultural destruction of the California native populations as the mission system was being established by disrupting their traditional way of life. The Catholic priests of the Franciscan order converted the native populations of California under duress by forcing them into settlements to destroy their cultural traditions and norms. For instance, the letter by Jean Francois La Perouse reports that the Mission Indians of Carmel forced the natives to work and pray under the pain of corporal punishment. The mission forcefully baptized the locals and forced them to reside within the plantations, where they worked as passive beings for the white priests (Class Text, 1786). The Spanish Crown was complicit in the destruction of the California native populations: the priests worked together with the soldiers in imprisoning and enslaving the locals in the plantations. The mission system destroyed the California native populations by forcing them to abandon their culture and ways of living.

One consequence of the California Mission system discussed in the sources is destroying the native population’s culture and customs. The forceful indoctrination of locals resulted in the cultural destruction of the Native American way of life along California's Pacific Coast. The missions required Native Americans to live in small towns where they received religious education and were taught Spanish and European culture.
