PHQ- 9
A patient health questionnaire (PHQ) is an assessment tool that is used in the health sector to evaluate the mental health of patients.it is used for patients that are going through depression, and it can tell how advanced is the depression level. This tool is a screening tool that is used to measure 12 mental and health disorders (Patient, n.d.). The PHQ consists of questions that the patient is supposed to answer, and through this, the health official can tell the depression level. The PHQ-9 is a tool consisting of nine questions and is used as a scale for a patient health questionnaire. A group of doctors invented a patient health questionnaire from Colombia University in the year 1990, and later in the year 1999, PHQ-9 was created (Kroenke, Spitzer, & Williams, 2001).
Depression is a common disorder that can be treated and has gained popularity since most people at some point in life go through mental disorders. The mental health cases' continued rise called for an assessment tool that was capable of screening the mental illness. This assessment tool is issued to the patient to answer questions based on his /her behavior, such as his eating level within a given period (Kroenke, Spitzer, & Williams, 2001). The PHQ-9 device has a scale of 0-3, where zero represents not at all, while three is for nearly every day.
