Continuous Quality Improvement in Healthcare: Evolution, Processes, and Distinction from Quality Assurance

Overview

This paper examines Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) as a structured organizational process in healthcare designed to minimize variability, reduce costs, and enhance patient care. It traces the evolution of CQI over 50 years, particularly through the integration of statistical approaches, and differentiates CQI from quality assurance by emphasizing its systems-focused rather than individual-performance-focused methodology.

Question 1

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) in healthcare refers to the structured organizational process that involves physicians and other workers in planning and implementing a continuous improvement process to provide quality care. In healthcare organization, it is used to minimize variability and reduce costs, assist in meeting the regulatory requirements, and enhance client services. Practitioners are well-positioned in advocating for quality improvement within the healthcare setting. This is because they are greatly involved in the frontline activities of clinical care, acting as agents of change. In healthcare CQI is intended to improve healthcare by identifying the challenges, implement and monitor corrective action, as well as study its effectiveness. With a continuous quality improvement strategy in place, there will be minimal clinical errors as well as increased adaptability to emerging challenges. CQI is also necessary because it increases efficiency and eliminates unnecessary losses and wastage (Lorch & Pollak, 2014).

Question 2

CQI processes have improved over the last 50 years, especially with the introduction of the statistical approach in quality improvement. The method has been applied in manufacturing to improve and reduce costs of manufacturing services. This is an iterative process that allowed for planning to improve products or process, implementation of developed plans, assess results and compare outcome against those expected, and design corrective actions on the important differences between the expected and actual results. Therefore, over the last 50 years, CQI has significantly improved through the inclusion of statistical models in the quest to enhance quality.
