Frozen is a Disney musical that premiered on Broadway in March 2018 and is based on the 2013 film going by the same title. The musical broke box office records and was nominated for several Tony awards because of its dynamic musical numbers and aptness in furthering the plot and developing the personalities of film characters. Featuring the successful songwriting duo of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and her husband, Robert Lopez, the musical tapped established Broadway talent, including Josh Gad (“Mormon”), Idina Menzel (“Wicked”), and Jonathan Groff (“Spring Awakening”). The first similarity between the Disney musical and an opera is the use of a soprano by the heroine. In the musical, Idina Menzel brings to life Elsa with her soprano: Menzel’s high bright voice in “Wicked” suggests virtue, femininity, and innocence consistent with traditional opera (OperaVision, 2023). Another similarity is the use of tenor by the hero or love interest: Jonathan Groff sings “Spring Awakening” with a tenor, the highest male voice in an opera. The third similarity between a musical and an opera is the use of aria.

Vocal solos are used throughout the musical to express personal emotions or thoughts consistent with the musical form used in an opera. The fourth similarity between the two is the use of an ensemble. Frozen’s cast (Colby Dezelick, Belinda Allyn, Kristen Davis, Alicia Albright, C.K.
