Comparative Analysis of Fortepiano and Modern Piano: Tonal Qualities, Physical Characteristics, and Performance Techniques

Overview

This paper compares the fortepiano and modern piano across their historical usage, tonal qualities, physical specifications, and performance requirements. The author argues that while both instruments share structural similarities, the fortepiano produces a softer, more delicate tone compared to the modern piano's vigorous and robust sound, with significant differences in weight, key mechanics, and hammer construction contributing to their distinct performance characteristics.

Forte Piano Vs. Modern Piano

Forte-Piano was used between 1700 to early 19th century. They are famous for the work of Haydn, Mozart, and the younger Beethoven. Beethoven’s era experienced steady evolution, the piano paving to the modern piano in the 19th century. This led to fortepiano becoming obsolete in the 19th century. However, it was later revived in the 20th century due to an interest in historical performances. Today, the fortepianos are built-in workshops for these historical performances (Skowronek, 151). This paper compares the fortepiano and the modern piano, explaining how they are played, their merits and demerits.

Both the pianos produce a varied pitch depending on the pianist’s key. However, the fortepiano is always soft. Their performance is more soothing compared to the modern piano that has a stern tone. The two videos I selected are playing the same melodies, but one of fortepiano has a softer tone. The style of the fortepiano is very different from the modern one. It is consistent with the softer tone (Claves Records Official). The dynamics accent stands out more in the fortepiano than contemporary because they differ from more delicate notes in timbre, volume, and decay rapidly.

The tone quality in fortepianos is different in various registers. The bass is slightly buzzing in the video sample and a bit tinkling in the treble tone (EuroArtsChannel). On the other hand, the modern piano is round and more uniform in the tonal range than the fortepiano.
