Artists' Statements and Meaning: Interpreting Gender Discrimination in Middle Eastern Women's Artwork

Overview

This paper examines how artistic meaning is constructed and interpreted through the lens of signification theory, using photography as a case study. The author analyzes two photographs depicting Iranian women to demonstrate how denotation and connotation processes help audiences understand an artist's commentary on gender discrimination and resilience in Middle Eastern societies.

Meanings in Artwork

Art is an essential discipline as part of our daily lives and the society in which we exist. Through different artworks, artists relay specific information and messages to an audience on certain issues. After viewing an artwork, for example, a sculpture, the audience understands the message being conveyed by the artist. However, the meaning of an artwork cannot be entirely exhausted for any works. The meaning of an artwork relies on factors such as perceptions of the audience, political alignments, and social values or controversies associated with the artists or artwork. These are dynamic and continuously change with time. As artwork ages, its authentic meaning changes across different generations. Signification is an aspect in the field of art, which is interrelated to the meaning of an artwork. Signification focuses on the interpretation process of an artwork's meaning (Alikarami, 2019). Denotation and connotation, which are processes under Signification, aid in understanding the meaning conveyed in an artist’s work. Denotation provides a general observation, while connotation attempts to provide the detailed meaning of the artwork beyond denotation.
