Amorphous Calcium Phosphate as a Major Component in Zebrafish Fin Bone Formation

Overview

This paper investigates bone formation processes in zebrafish fin bony rays, examining whether amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) minerals are present and their transformation into crystalline phases. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, the study demonstrates that ACP is a major component in forming fin bones and progressively transforms into crystalline carbonated hydroxyapatite mineral phases.

Paper 2 Summary

Brief Image Summary

The process of bone formation in vertebrates has been controversial for a long time. The zebrafish fin bony rays represent a model of skeletal bones that has numerous advantages in investigating mineral formation processes. There are progressive directional growths in different segments that offer a spatial and temporal resolution of formation. Another essential aspect is that the development of bones takes place at a much lower temperature. Therefore, this slows down the kinematic transformation of the potential phases that reveal the mature mineral. The experiment was whether there were in minerals in the fin bones or not. The particles that were extracted were found to crystallize after a certain period (Mahadil et al., 2008).

Summary of Results

The TEM of fin ray bones was undertaken using the standard thin sections. The TEM revealed that the collagen fibrils were arranged laterally in the form of bundles aligned to each other. The fins of the zebrafish bony rays represent a system of skeletal bones that possesses numerous advantages that can be used in the studying of mineral formation processes. There is multiple observation that suggests that the ACP transforms into a crystal-like mineral phase. Another important aspect that was noted through the investigation is that the proportion of crystalline mineral increases in relation to the ACP. The major mineral phase of the parts of the freshly formed parts of the fish. The disordered phase is also an indication of the crystalline carbonated hydroxyapatite.
