Ambition Definition Essay

Frank Tyger said that “Ambition is enthusiasm with a purpose.” According to the Merrian-Webster, ambition is defined as “an ardent desire for rank, fame, or power” or “desire to achieve a particular end.” The Latin word for this kind of desire is called ambitio, which originated from ambire, a verb that means “to go around.” Because the act resulted from a desire to attain honor, the word eventually implied “the desire for honor or power” (Merrian-Webster). During the Middle Ages, the word was introduced in French and English as ambition. The word was first used in Roman Politics. Candidates desiring to work in political offices spent much of their time convincing citizens to vote and support them. The word used to describe this act was ambitio, and the act was ambire (Merrian-Webster). Ambition means living with purpose, dedication, and a winning attitude.

Through my investigation, I have noted that ambitious people live with a purpose. They know what they want and are willing to pay the price. Life is meaningless without ambition, and having a purpose to live for is the main drive for ambitious individuals. Through purpose, we can impart and perceive the essence of life. People living without aim or purpose are like rudderless ships, travelers without a destination. Ambition and purpose urge us to struggle and attain what we have been longing to achieve. Throughout history, great men and women were possessed by ambition, and purpose gave them the drive to attain what they wanted.
