A Sociological Perspective on the History of Infinity and Infinite Processes

Overview

This paper addresses an underexplored sociological perspective on the concept of infinity and infinite processes. The author argues that cultural and sociological perspectives should complement the traditional mathematical-philosophical approaches to understanding infinity, proposing connections between mathematical traditions from ancient to modern times and contemporary social-theoretical frameworks.

The History of Infinity

Question 1

Move 1: The theory of infinity has been a source of interest and debate among philosophers, mathematicians, and sociologists. While philosophers and mathematicians continue to unravel the richness of the realm of the infinities, sociologists have been trying to examine the different branches and uses of the concepts of infinite across time.

Move 2: Given the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, the FotFS conference series has been organized over the years to emphasize the need for a multidimensional approach to history and philosophy of infinity. Eight conferences have so far been organized and numerous conferences papers of the proceedings and findings published.

Move 3: I will seek to address a neglected sociological perspective of the question of infinity and infinite processes. I will tackle an ignored section in the theoretical background of social and critical theories with the aim of improving knowledge of infinity and infinite processes.

Move 4: I will extrapolate the mathematical-philosophical tradition characterized by the concepts of infinity and infinite processes from ancient to modern times. I will then give allusive suggestions of how these concepts connect with existing social-theoretical ideas in the directions of the weak-naturalistic and the socio-cultural.
