Writing Under Deadline

You've got 24 hours (or less). Here's how to write a solid essay when time is tight — and still get a decent grade.

Deadline pressure is real, and panic rarely helps. But you can still write a respectable essay fast if you triage ruthlessly and skip the things that don't matter most.

First: Know what you have time for

24 hours or more: You can draft, revise, and edit. Aim for a complete essay.

12 hours: Draft quickly, do basic editing. Skip some revision depth.

6 hours or less: Outline, write the draft, skip revision. Prioritize clarity over perfection.

The time-crunch priority order

Must do (non-negotiable)

Should do (if time allows)

Can skip (won't tank your grade)

Fast-draft strategy

  1. Spend 15 min outlining your argument
  2. Write your strongest body paragraph first (builds momentum)
  3. Write remaining body paragraphs (don't edit, just write)
  4. Write intro and conclusion (often easier when body is done)
  5. Do one full read-through, fixing obvious issues only
The 20-minute review: Before submitting, spend 20 minutes only on: (1) Is my thesis clear? (2) Does each paragraph support it? (3) Are there obvious typos? Skip everything else.

Even if you wrote under deadline, your essay probably isn't as bad as you think. A quick, clear essay beats a brilliant one that's never finished.

FAQ

Is there a minimum quality threshold under deadline, or just finish it?

Finish it with a clear thesis and supporting evidence. Quality matters, but a complete C-grade essay beats an incomplete A-grade essay every time.

Should I ask my professor for an extension if I'm going to miss the deadline?

Ask early, not the night before. Most professors will grant a short extension if you ask in advance with a good reason.

Can I write a good essay in a few hours?

Yes, if you skip revision and perfectionism. Outline, draft, submit. It won't be polished, but it'll be coherent.
