Community health project

Realistic scope
Capstones are BACHELOR'S-level, not master's-level. They're ambitious but achievable in one semester while managing clinical rotations and other courses.
- Too narrow: "Improve handoff communication on one 12-bed unit, one shift" — lacks impact, limited data
- Realistic: "Implement standardized handoff protocol (SBAR) on our surgical unit, measure for 4 weeks, evaluate staff/patient satisfaction and communication errors"
- Too broad: "Reduce hospital-acquired infections hospital-wide" — beyond scope, too many variables, no semester feasibility
Questions before choosing a project
- Is the problem real and important? Does your unit/organization genuinely care about this? Capstones are stronger when addressing actual organizational priorities.
- Is implementation feasible in your timeline (12-16 weeks)? Some outcomes take months to see; choose outcomes measurable within semester (process measures, intermediate outcomes) or plan a pilot phase.
- Do you have organizational support? You need access, cooperation, and ideally, a champion (manager, educator) supporting your work.
- Can you measure outcomes? Outcomes must be observable and measurable. "Improve nursing care" is vague. "Increase patient satisfaction with pain management by 20%" is measurable.
Capstone components and requirements
Proposal phase (typically weeks 1-4)
- Problem statement: What's the issue? Why does it matter?
- PICOT or project question: What exactly will you address?
- Literature review/evidence: What does research show about this problem or solutions?

Common capstone mistakes
- Problem too broad: Scope is unachievable in one semester. Narrow your focus to something meaningful but doable.
- No organizational support: Starting without manager/administrator approval wastes effort. Get support upfront.
- Weak evidence base: Implementing an intervention without reviewing evidence first. Ground your project in research.
- Outcomes not measurable: "Improve quality" without defining how you'll measure. Measurable outcomes are essential.
- No sustainability plan: Project ends with your semester. Address: Who will continue this? What resources are needed? How will we sustain it?
- Insufficient evaluation: Collecting no data or minimal data on outcomes. Robust evaluation data makes capstones strong.
- Poor presentation quality: Capstones require scholarly presentation (professional written paper and/or presentation). Budget time for polishing.
