*You are going to be selecting an Impressionist or Post Impressionist painting to copy, using oil pastels, on watercolor paper.
Select a favorite (or new to you) painting from one of the artists who was part of the Impressionist or Post Impressionist movements. Some examples include Monet, Van Gogh, or Gauguin, though there are many others. Another option would be to select a photo of a landscape that you took, or one on Unsplash.com and create an Impressionist style with the image.
Print out one of their paintings or a photo in color. Use this as a guide to apply heavy pressure using oil pastels. Try to imitate the color and brushstrokes or if you are using a photo, try to create interesting colors using a color arrangement you create. If it’s a painting, identify the color arrangement if you are able.
Here’s (https://www.galerielelong.com/artists/petah-coyne) a great video illustrating this process. The artist creates something inspired by these artists. You may copy directly or follow her lead for inspiration. Start the video at 7:20. A tip on how to use oil pastels: do not try to smear them as you would chalk pastels…instead, if you want them to blend you can either use a tiny bit of baby oil on a q tip OR you can just continue to bear down hard and build up the material. As you get the oil pastel thicker and thicker, the colors will blend and mix.
*When you complete the drawing, take a good picture, and submit a link, jpeg, or another photo file.
