In ACCT 621 we explore the use of accounting information in the decisions made by management during the process of planning and controlling. It includes systems that measure the cost and profitability of products and services, implications of change in investment, cost reduction strategies, and financial reporting guidelines, both formal and informal requirements, and their effect on managerial judgment. More specifically, we focus on managerial decision making with particular emphasis on internal control mechanisms and how they are used in leading an organization or department. This will include the implication of changes in accounting policy on investing, operating and financing choices. This case assignment will provide an opportunity to investigate alternative managerial accounting methods, quantitative and qualitative reporting mediums, market data and/or current research to determine if the available accounting information gives the information required to facilitate high quality decision making. This is an individual based project that is tasked with researching and analyzing an operational business issue/problem and related financial data of a company that is presented by management.

Requirements:

You are to prepare an informative business report of no more than 1,000 words (brevity is key in business) that addresses the business concerns of management.

The following case writing framework may serve as a guideline:

 Provide a brief summary/overview of the company operations (i.e., what its main product/service is, where it operates, customers, location, etc.).

Each case is different so you must tailor this section accordingly.

 Identify the business problem/issue at hand and explain why it is important and how it impacts the business operations.

 Explain the problem with concepts and applications gathered from the course.

 Provide alternatives solutions by generating and evaluating possible solutions.

 Propose a recommendation to management and an action plan supported by your research.

 Provide at least two (2) references that support the issue at hand; you are expected to incorporate your course readings and external research findings as support for your recommendations and/or action plan.
