A multilayer transparent block is made of a layer of cubic zirconium, CZ, (n=2.18) attached to a layer of quartz (n=1.54). The block is in air. Laser light enters the block from the CZ side with an incident angle of 32°. The light exits the bottom of the block going from quartz into air.
a. Sketch the block in air with a ray diagram of the path of the light from air, into cubic zirconium, into quartz and out the far side into air. Angles don’t have to be exact but they must show if refracted angles are larger or smaller than incident angles.
b. At what boundary(ies) could total internal reflection (TIR) occur? Calculate the critical angle(s).
c. What is the angle of refraction at the air-cubic zirconium boundary?
d. What is the incident angle of the light at the boundary between the CZ and the quartz? What is the refracted angle as the light crosses this boundary?
e. What is the refracted angle of the light as it enters air from the quartz? If the light is not refracted, explain why and determine the angle of reflection.
