How can a nurse aide identify Mr. James’s medical problems, his emotional and physical needs, and deal with these problems? Pay close attention to safety issues specific for an individual who is diabetic and has cardiac problems.
Scenario:
You are a Nurse Aide and are working in a long term facility. You are assigned to care for Mr. James.
This is the report you receive from the nurse.
“Mr. James is a 75 yr. old male. Mr. James’s wife died suddenly about 3 months ago. Mr. James has a long Hx of diabetes and is insulin dependent. He also has severe hypertension. Mr. James recently suffered a heart attack and has been admitted to the facility because he can no longer care for himself at home.”
When you meet Mr. James, he is in the activity room with several of the other residents. You hear Mr. James ask one of the residents if they would like to “have sex with him”. Mr. James turns to you and asks if you would like to “have sex with him too”
You take Mr. James back to his room and, on the way back to his room, Mr. James begins to argue with a male resident. The other resident tells Mr. James to “shut up”.
When you get Mr. James into his room for AM care, he tells you that he would like to have a shave. He refuses to take a shower and wants to take a hot tub bath. Mr. James takes out toenail clippers and begins to clip his toenails. While Mr. James is clipping his toenails, he tells you that he does not want to put on any of the clothes in his closet. He intends to “hang out” wearing boxers and a tee shirt.
