This assessment encourages you to reflect on your personal development in relation to your future career, by considering both technical and non-technical (transferrable) skills. You will produce a report with 4 sections as outlined below.
a) Find a real job advert for a job that interests you and is related to your degree subject area. The job advert should be current, and should provide a detailed description of the role, and the knowledge/skills required. The job can be at any level, so it can be a graduate entry-level role, or a role that you might aspire to reach later in your career.
It does not matter if you don’t know what you want to do after you graduate; this is an opportunity to start exploring possible options. You could start with an internet search such as “what can I do with a degree in ….”.
b)Take a screenshot of your chosen role and paste it into your report, so that your lab tutor can see the details of the role, qualifications/skills required, etc.
a) Summarise the key technical/subject-specific skills required for the role.
b) Identify the six transferrable skills that you think will be the most important to your chosen role. For each skill, explain what the skill involves (e.g. what does effective ‘communication’ look like in the workplace?), and how the skill is relevant/important to your chosen role.
c) Find some good quality online resources (i.e. not just websites) that can support your discussion (e.g. sources that discuss the importance of transferrable skills in the workplace, in graduate
employment, or specific areas of work). Use in-text citations to link your discussion to your sources, and include a list of references at the end of the report.
A list of possible skills is listed below, from which you can choose, but you may come up with other
ideas.
• Communication
•Teamwork
•Listening
• Critical thinking
•Problem-solving
• Adaptability
• Attention to detail
• Numeracy
• Time management
• Creativity
•Innovation
•Ability to deal with complexity
• Intellectual curiosity
•Commercial awareness
• Independent thinking
For each of the skills that you have identified in Section 2, write a brief reflection using the following as a guide. You do not need to answer the questions; you should use them as a guide for critically evaluating each skill.
• To what extent have you developed this skill already?
•Where have you met this skill already*?
•To what extent do you need to develop this skill further?
•How can you develop this skill further?
• Where might you meet this skill as part of your course?
*this might include school/college, part-time job, hobbies, clubs or societies, semester 1 of your course, etc.
In the Week 6 lab you were tasked with completing a Skills Audit, and starting work on your Future Me Plan. You will now revisit your Future Me Plan and submit it along with a short reflection.
Make sure your Future Me Plan has at least two long-term aims. ‘Long-term’ could refer to this academic year, the duration of your course, or longer. Things you might consider include:
• The Skills Audit you did in the Week 3 lab, and your discussion for Sections 2 and 3 of this assessment. What skills have you identified for improvement. What might you do to improve in those areas?
• What can you do to improve your employability generally?
• Do you have a particular career goal in mind?
• What can you do help improve your CV, and make it stand out from other CVs?
• If you are not sure what you want to do as a future career, what can you do to explore potential career opportunities in your subject area?
• For each long-term aim identify some short-term goals, with SMART objectives, that will help you to achieve your aims.
You can find information to help you with goal–setting on Rise webpages and in the lecture slides from week 4.
•Reflect on your Future Me Plan by briefly discussing why you chose these long-term goals, and how they will serve to improve your future employability and get you where you want to be in the future.
